I want to start this by telling new people a bit about myself.
I am in my late 20s and I live with my husband and cat in North Carolina. I make my living doing archaeology and spend a great deal of time traveling all over the Southeastern United States.
When I am not working and traveling, I am happiest at home sewing.
I would consider myself a pretty modern quilter. In terms of sewing I love bright colors, paper piecing, solid fabrics, and making it work.
Okay, giveaway time.
I decided to give away a little prize pack of some of my favorite things. 'Cause I like you.
I am including 10 comic book boards. I have recently become addicted to using these to store fabric and I figured this would be a nice way for someone who has not tried this yet to give it a test drive.
My stash, all organized (okay, only part of my stash). |
An issue of Generation Q. There are some great things in this one.
A Frixxon pen.
A tiny charm pack of Lario, by Moda. These adorable charms make me smile, everything small is cute.
A fat eight of this cute flower fabric (I think it is DS quilts) and 2 half yards of these green prints from Joel Dewberry's Notting Hill line.
To enter all you have to do is tell me what homemade gift you like to give your friends and family? Do you make them all zippy pouches? Jam? Cookies? Quilts? You never make any gifts at all? I am looking for new ideas, tell me about your go-to present. Even better if you can link up to a tutorial or recipe.
Rules (necessary):
One comment per person please. Do not just write a random comment, please answer the question. The giveaway is open only to addresses shipping in the United States. I am terribly sorry about this, but this is my first giveaway and I need to crawl before I walk.
The giveaway will be open until May 10th at midnight (eastern time). I will choose the winner randomly from the comments and announce the winner on May 11th. If you are a no-reply blogger please leave an email address in your comment (you can use the someone[at]whatever[dot]com format to discourage spammers). If there is no email address and no contact information I will choose another winner.
Thanks for visiting! You should stop around again sometime.
For now, go enter more giveaways!
That's a lovely giveaway...the frixxon pen are awesome. =)
ReplyDeleteI love making pouches...they are quick and easy to whip up for little gifts...I usually make them for hostesses, when we travel, etc.
http://www.noodle-head.com/2010/04/gathered-clutch-tutorial.html
This is one great tutorial I use. =) Thanks again.
That's so fun you are an archeologist! I didn't know that. I like to mostly give quilts as gifts, since I like quilting best.
ReplyDeleteI normally like to give quilts as my go to gift, but for Christmas the past two years I've enjoyed giftin advent calendars to my niece and nephew using this tutorial on sew mama sew...http://www.sewmamasew.com/store/media/blog/SMSAdventCalendar.pdf
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely lovely and generous giveaway! (PS - This is my first time participating too.)
ReplyDeleteSome non-quilt projects...
This is a great go-to present. My sister absolutely loves the version I made for her with all the extra pocket add-on's: http://www.noodle-head.com/2010/04/gathered-clutch-tutorial.html
Although I haven't seen this one in action, my mother did ooh and ahh at Christmas when I gave her my version of this accessory organizer. Much easier than I had imagined. http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/08/hanging-jewelry-holder-space-saver.html
And this is great. You can get away with using mixed, smaller pieces of fabric than it calls for: http://www.sew4home.com/projects/storage-solutions/travel-accessories-8-pocket-jewelry-pouch
It depends on the year. It's generally something quilty or sewing related, but I tend to make all of my friends the same thing for birthdays, just personalized. Last year, I made mini quilts for all of them, and this year, I'm making pillows. It's sad that I need this system to keep track of what I've given to each person, but it helps me avoid repeats!
ReplyDeleteplans for christmas gifts this year (i'm trying to get ahead, since I know 'll be busy studying come November/December)
ReplyDeleteyoga mat bag, grocery bag holder, kitchen aid cover, travel pillow cover, 5-minute bread bag (with a book about making breads!), e-reader cover, and reversible shoe bag. so many!
That hedgehog is so cute! Oh yes the question. I like making place-mats but I hate binding them. They are quick and a fun way to practice new quilting styles.
ReplyDeleteThrow pillow covers! I like to buy relatives a pillow form plus cover, then for future holidays I make more covers the same size, lol.
ReplyDeleteZippy pouches are always fun! But I think I'll be making some fabric-covered clipboards this year.
ReplyDeleteTablerunners! That is what I like to make. All occasion or seasonal. They are fun and quilt to make. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love love love the One Yard Wonders book. If you don't have it than stop reading and order it. It has tons of things in it that I use as gifts. Small bags, baby things, travel items, pet stuff, house stuff. Way too much to list.

Earlier this year I made 11 triple zip pouches to give as birthday gifts throughout the year. You can find the tutorial over at A Quilters Table.
ReplyDeleteI like mug rugs. I can paper piece an interest of the recipient and also practice my free motion on a small scale.

ReplyDeleteYour cat is adorable! I also have a cat at home who feels the need to sit on top of anything I may be sewing. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for what I make for friends and family, I make a lot of jewelry. I also love to make quilted coasters from fabric scraps.
Great first giveaway! I like to give quilts to babies, and adults I know will appreciate them. I've made some journal covers and needlebooks for quilty friends. I used to give cookies to everyone, but now I spend all my time sitting at the sewing machine instead of near the kitchen. I think sets of placemats might be my next thing to make people for the holidays (everyone can use those!)
ReplyDeleteI make them quilts.... but, if I want something quick, I go for pot holders, but I found out that they won't use them because they are afraid of getting them dirty.
ReplyDeleteI like to make dolly quilts (about the size of a mini quilt) using the leftovers of bedsized quilts I've made) that are colorful and quirky. These can be used as oversized table toppers, mug rugs, or table scarves. They are fun to make and low stress. alternate email mlwright29(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI try not to overextend myself handmaking gifts. Pillows are nice, potholders, an occasional quilt. I do pottery as well, so that's always good.
ReplyDeleteI make quilts, pillowcases, and wine gift bags...thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeletei usually make quilts, but i think pouches are great!! i'm such a slow worker that pouches are much more feasible!
ReplyDeleteI make my grandpa ketchup all the time -- he's allergic to onions and garlic, among other things, so he can't use store-bought. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI like to make felt food for my little nieces & nephews. Some of the other gifts have been purses, skirts, and quilted coasters.
ReplyDeleteI like to make all newlyweds a Christmas ornament using their invitation.
ReplyDeleteI usually pick a different project each year. Last year I just did little bags with homemade ornaments, caramels and marshmallows... Marshmallows are my new favorite. They're super easy to make and impress people. I like making bags for gifts, too.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I'd say I gift food. Sometimes it's in the form of jams, and sometimes it's in the form of fresh produce that we grow. I'm seriously hoping to start gifting quilted baby blankets; or placemats/napkins to those without little ones.
ReplyDeleteMy go-to gift for children is pillow cases for holidays or sports teams. I started doing that for my mom while she was in a nursing home - they made her happy. My go-to gift for wedding showers in a quilted tree skirt. They are always favorites!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite gift to give my family is photography related because they like gifts with my children. I tend to do frames, or altered books with photos.

ReplyDeleteI like pillows, lap quilts and food!
ReplyDeleteI try to make everyone close to me who has a baby a quilt!
ReplyDeleteI like making gifts for my family and it all depends on who it is as to what I make them. My husband is from a big family so in the past I've made them jar gifts with recipe card attached and that has gone over very well and everyone gets to try a new recipe. I've also made quilts, coasters, afghans, neck wraps and last year I made all our little great nieces, great nephews and our grandson stampers using bottle tops. They were a big hit. This year I hope to get pot holders, coaster and of course more jar gifts made for Christmas gifts and I hope to make a few neck wraps and of course I can't leave out a quilt or two to those very special ones.

ReplyDeleteellen(at)myerly(dot)net
I did rag quilt for nieces and nephews last year. Thanks for chance to win.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely fabric! I make lap quilts for gifts when I have the time. But if I need a quick gift, I make a beaded crystal suncatcher. Amazon sells 40 mm crystals fairly cheap, and they make wonderful rainbows. I put a beading string through the hole at the top of the crystal, add about 6 inches of beads to the string, and finish it with a metal keychain ring at the top for hanging the suncatcher. Your kitty obviously likes your quilts! So do I! Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteI don't make many gifts but I really want to learn how to make zip pouches as I think they would be great gifts and easily customized for the individual. Food gifts (banana nut bread, muffins, pies) are also great gifts. From not too far away in SC. Thanks for participating in the Giveaway Day.

ReplyDeleteI want to make them all quilts, but it's going to take a while!
ReplyDeleteI've made lots of homemade caramels (some won't let me come visit unless I bring some) and crocheted doilies. The only sewn item I gave was a little simple drawstring bag one year where I included crocheted washcloths, makeup remover pads, some homemade soap (not mine) and a few other "spa" items.

All are sewn or knitted. I hope to do dresses this year :)
ReplyDeleteMy grandmothers quilts to me are my favorite homemade gift. I'm starting to learn to quilt now
